EYC Members at the NYYC Annual Regatta |
|
|
The 168th New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta took place in Newport last weekend, consisting of Friday’s Around-the-Island race, followed by two days of drop-mark racing. Weekend conditions were challenging as the familiar Newport sea breeze never quite made an appearance, so it was important to be able to boat-handle well and adjust between different modes as the breeze went up and down. Many EYC members were in attendance, with most securing podium finishes. EYC members at the NYYC Annual Regatta: Commodore Henry Brauer, Hannah Polster, Lily Lichtenstein - Tio Loco - 3rd place ORC C Dru & Jack Slattery - Marilee - 1st place Classics 1 Jim Da Silva - Vamoose - 1st place PHRF 2
Stan Schreyer, Ian McLaughlin, Charlotte Martinez (EYC Assistant Sailing Director) - Escape Velocity - 1st place ORC D Jud Smith - Courageous - 2nd place 12m Class Robbie Doyle - Proteus - 3rd place ORC A (2nd place Around-the-Island) Tom & Cole Erskine - Denali - 4th place ORC A
Bob Campbell - Challenge 12 - 5th place 12m Class James Collins, Charlie Welsh - Pterodactyl - 6th place ORC B Garrett McKinnon - Wicked 2.0 - 2nd place PHRF 2 |

Submitted by Toby Reiley. The Safety at Sea Seminar held last Saturday ran 28 participants through the practical aspects of preparing for the unthinkable: Fire, Abandoning ship, using pyrotechnic flares to attract help, VHF procedures, damage control, assessing and prioritizing situations including medical emergencies, and preventing dehydration and seasickness. 95% of the material is applicable to sailor and powerboaters alike. The Marblehead Fire Department sent seven men to help out with both teaching and logistics. They are a great team! Check out the video here on the drill they assisted with on the beach.
A big thanks to EYC volunteers Clarke Smith, Bill Murray, Don Hancock, Sam Altreuter and Bryan Lee for helping out. Also, a shout out goes to the most generous help and can-do attitudes from Seamus Hourihan and John Thompson for the use of their equipment and boat (respectively) for demonstration purposes. John was also our volunteer Person-Over-Board whom was rescued from the 55 degree water!
We were so pleased with our instructor that we have already booked him for the same weekend next year! |
