San Diego Women’s Winter Invitational |
Team EYC competed in the first event of the season at the San Diego YC Women's Winter Invite. Recap below from team captain Lily Lichtenstein:
“This impressive event brought together 24 teams of women from North America. Racing took place in La Playa right off E dock in J22s with 4 teams racing at a time and scores averaged throughout the rotation. The team pulled off two second place finishes in their first two races in the shifty light air. We struggled a little as the breeze built in the afternoon and were matched up against some of the more competitive teams. |

Saturday night's social event included karaoke where the team had to pay homage to Taylor Swift. Sunday morning brought wind delay till about 12:30 when the sea breeze finally came in. With a refreshed, more aggressive strategy we performed much better on Sunday, winning our first race of the day. We stayed consistent and put up 3 more 2nds; bringing the average score up by a whole point. Unfortunately with the wind delay, it meant the race committee was unable to complete the full 78 race rotation, which we needed for a chance to improve our scores further. Overall we had a great time on and off the water and were pleased with our improvements on Sunday. Huge congrats to our friends in the harbor, the CYC ladies, for winning the silver fleet!

ICYMI: New Sonars Coming in 2025! |
The following is an excerpt from Commodore Peter Frisch’s letter to the membership on February 1, 2024: “The First General Meeting was held on January 18, 2024, and it was good to see so many members in attendance. During this meeting, several votes were held… The final vote involved the Sailing Committee proposal to purchase six new Club Sonars, to be built by Rondar Sailboats. I am delighted to report that the Sailing Committee’s proposal was approved. We hope and anticipate that the six new Sonars will be delivered in the summer of 2025. Following the First General Meeting, I conferred with Vice Commodore Alan McKinnon and Rear Commodore Larry Ehrhardt about naming a committee to oversee the purchase of the Sonars. Larry, an ex officio member of the Sailing Committee, and Bill Lynn
, the Sailing Committee Chair, will serve as the co-chairs of the Sonar Purchase Committee, and the following members have been asked to assist: Andrew Flaherty, Kelsey Wheeler, Alden Reid, Doug Morgan, and Will Hundahl
. Also, Alan McKinnon and I will serve as ex officio members. This committee’s responsibility is to review the contract with Rondar, consider members’ usage of the boats and stipulate any changes to the boats, observe the building of the boats to ensure quality and satisfactory workmanship, and to arrange for the delivery of the boats to Eastern after they leave the container ship(s) in Elizabeth, New Jersey.” |
