ILCA Masters North American Championship |
EYC ILCA sailors Patrick Andreasen, Ed Austin, Tom Dailey, Ledyard McFadden, Ben Richardson, Stein Skaane, Anne Marije Veenland-Lee, and Ulf Westhoven traveled down to Newport on September 29 for the ILCA Masters North Americans hosted by New York Yacht Club. In addition to all the EYC competitors, Tom Dailey served as the event chair and Stephen Jeffries as the PRO. |
In a battle of attrition, the sailors experienced lots of wind and rain over the course of the three day event, with only about two-thirds of the 103-boat fleet finishing all the races. Patrick Andreasen sent a first-hand recap below:
"Another windy and rainy regatta with the heels of a hurricane. Windy 18-25 knots, 1-3 knot downwind current made it a good regatta for the big and fit. Eight EYC members and six Marblehead racers headed down to Newport. Stephen Jeffries ran three grueling double W/L races a day for a total of nine races. Everyone had a high point to offset their mistakes or swims. It was great to catch up with our international and North American friends. It was a special treat to race with Wayne Colahan. Wayne was the co-founder of the MHD Laser Fleet and a long time EYC member until he moved to Florida."

US Sailing Adult Championship for the Mallory Trophy |
EYC member Charlie Welsh and his crew Scott Rasmussen clinched the 2023 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship, racing in VX Ones on October 5-8 in Macatawa, MI. Welsh and Rasmussen finished tied with Doug Clark and Tim Desmond but won on tiebreak in the 8-race series. |
The championship got underway in rain, 8-12 knots of wind, and 2-3 foot waves out on Lake Michigan, completing 4 races. On the second day, storms held off long enough to allow the race committee to get three races in the books on Lake Macatawa, the inside racecourse option. Racing was canceled on day three due to gale force winds and 6-8 foot waves on Lake Michigan mixed with rain squalls. |
The final day saw the fleet back out on the big lake in 8-10 knots and a challenging sea state completing Race 8 before a breakdown delayed the start of Race 9. After the delay, the fleet got off the line in lighter breeze which died to under 4 knots then increased to over 25 sustained as a pop-up squall caused the race to be abandoned, marking the end of the regatta. |
