Team EYC Second at the Global Team Race |
Skippers Ansgar Jordan and Sam Merson, and crew members Michael Houllahan, Alix Israel, James Collins, Katie Rodger, Soenke Jordan, and Kelsey Wheeler traveled to London to compete in the Global Team Race hosted by Royal Thames Yacht Club on the Queen Mary Reservoir. The short courses, 2v2 format, and highly competitive field made for exciting racing, with few races decided before the final leg.
The team was greeted with champagne sailing conditions each morning, which progressed to something more exciting each afternoon, including rain, a squall featuring hail, and some big breeze for the finals.
By the end of the second day, the nine teams had nearly completed two round robins, with team EYC sitting at 9-5. The team began the final day with two must-win races in order to qualify for the semifinals and rose to the occasion, defeating Team Japan and the Dutch Team Race Association to clinch the final berth in the semis.
EYC faced off against #1 seed and host club RTYC in the semifinals, sweeping them in a commanding 2-0. Newport Harbor defeated New York Yacht Club in the other semifinals matchup to join EYC in the finals. EYC took the first race of the best-of-3 finals, but NHYC bounced back, winning the next two races to defend their 2022 victory.

EYC Sailors Third at US Match Race National Championship |
Regatta recap from skipper Clinton Hayes:
“Team EYC competed at the US Match Racing Championships in Rochester, NY this past weekend. Competition was tight and included the current world #1 and many former champions. We finished with 4 wins in the round robin, happy with our sonar boat speed and pre-starts, but leaving room for improvement with too many fouls and some match racing mistakes. Conditions were generally windy, 15-22 kts out of the NE, bringing waves that peaked at 3-5 feet on the last day. Our team rallied to win a tight quarterfinal, moving us to a semifinal match against the world #1. |
After winning the first start and leading upwind, a mark 1 call didn't go our way and resulted in a rare triple flag penalty, leading to a black flag and race loss. We kept it tight in race 2, almost passing on the last run, but ultimately couldn’t recover. After addressing some boat speed and tactical issues, we rallied and won the petit finals 2-0, finishing 3rd overall. It was a tough event, but the crew sailed strong with Sam Rodiger on the bow, Lily Lichenstein in the pit, and Peter Lynn trimming the main and kite. Huge thanks to EYC for supporting match racing and allowing us to compete with the best. Looking forward to more in the future!” |

Northeast District High School Championship |
EYC member Nicolas Regnault sailed the Healy Trophy - the Northeast District High School Championship Regatta - in Hyannis, hosted by the Hyannis Yacht Club, last Sunday, September 24th.
The fog, drizzle and shifty breeze from the NE challenged the sailors. Congratulations to Nicolas on his third place in the ILCA 7! |

Laser New England Masters Championship |
EYC’s Patrick Andreasen sent the below recap of this event:
“It was a Laser double header weekend as there was Laser Frostbiting at home and the Masters NE’s in Wickford. Eight Marblehead sailors headed south. Ophelia gave us some sporty conditions. Of the 49 signups, only 42 braved the conditions. Saturday saw wind in the lower 20’s with a few gusts over 25 knots. The rain was almost welcomed as it helped rinse the salt water out of our eyes! EYC’s Ben Richardson relished the conditions with a 1, 2. The highlight was when the RC sent us in as the carnage increased, and we were treated to a 2 mile downwind sail with 25 knots! Sunday was a little more moderate with wind 12-20 knots. It was more manageable and the heavy air experts had a little challenge from the remainder of the fleet.”
EYC members at the event included Ben Richardson, Patrick Andreasen, Ledyard McFadden, and Anne Marije Veenland-Lee. |
