Ponce de Leon Regatta Recap |
|
|
The Eastern hosted the Annual Ponce de Leon regatta on Sunday, September 17. This event is the kickoff to the fall Laser season. Hurricane Lee cleared out by Sunday morning and our waterfront team quickly reopened for business - thank you! By noon, 35 boats were on campus to enjoy warm temps, flat seas and a shifty W/SW breeze (around 8 knots with some bigger gusts throughout the day). The Race Committee, led by PRO Kate Dailey, ran 5 races before sending folks in for a lively awards ceremony.
Tomas Hornos won the day with 11 points. Jack Field had one race win and 18 total points to edge out Stein Skaane (18 pts) in the 2/3 tiebreaker. Nicolas Regnault (7th) overall was the Top Junior and Anne Marije Veenland (17th overall) was the top female. Erin Blake was recognized as the Race Committee Volunteer of the day for her efforts to keep the leeward gates square throughout the day.

Laser racing resumes this Sunday. Competitors meeting at noon, first start at 1pm. |

There are still more opportunities to represent Team EYC in 2023!
The Greenwich Cup on October 21 is an awesome chance to compete with our harbor rivals, CYC, and learn a ton about match racing in the process! Even if you are new to match racing, this event accommodates all experiences and is sure to be a fun day of sailing, with the low commitment of sailing only one day from noon to 4pm. Reach out to EYC team captain Hannah Lynn if you’re interested.
The Soiland Cup is a top-tier team race, held November 3 to 5, hosted by Southern Yacht Club in Flying Scots. EYC members have enjoyed this event in the past, not just for the competitive racing, but for all that New Orleans has to offer when the sun goes down. Contact team captain Peter Lynn if you’re interested in sailing. Team EYC at the Global Team Race
Follow along as Team EYC competes in the Global Team Race on the Queen Mary Reservoir in London, today through Saturday. The team consists of skippers Ansgar Jordan and Sam Merson, and crew members Michael Houllahan, Alix Israel, James Collins, Katie Rodger, Soenke Jordan, and Kelsey Wheeler. Check out team rosters and results here.

We are looking for a few volunteers to help with check in, rotations, and hauling sonars at the Halloween Team Race! The event is October 28 - 29. Check in will be from 8am - 9am Saturday morning. Rotation volunteers will help keep teams on track and get to their boats on time. On Sunday, we will need people to help with the crane and driving trailers after racing.
