Team Lala Land Wins First-Ever EYC Club Championship |
The team of Ansgar Jordan, Lily Lichtenstein, Anne Marije Veenland Lee, and Lizzie Russell won the inaugural EYC Club Championship last Sunday, August 13. Lily’s recap is below: |
| |
“For the inaugural club championships, Franny put together a collection of five different courses, one for each race, including a reaching start and a downwind start. This format forced all competitors to think outside of the box. We were met with a variety of conditions starting in very light wind, strong current and lots of power boat chop, typical for Marblehead summer. The first race was actually abandoned due to lack of wind. The breeze then shifted right and picked up velocity. The final race had us finishing directly in front of the club which meant navigating through the best lanes in the mooring field, which worked to our boat’s advantage. Overall a fun afternoon of tight racing! This is sure to be a great annual addition to club events.”

EYC Sailors Win Corinthian Classics Regatta |
EYC sailors Kate and Thomas Barrows, Rear Commodore Larry Ehrhardt, and Tomas Hornos grabbed the win in the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta last weekend. Kate’s event recap is below: |
“We had the awesome opportunity to compete in CYC's Classic Regatta on Black Watch which is a historic 68 foot yawl built in 1938. Each day we sailed in one pursuit race. On Saturday we sailed a reaching course to Nahant and back. On Sunday we sailed on a triangle course around Baker's Island. |
| |
As most of the crew had backgrounds in dingy and small keelboat sailing, this style of boat was a big change of pace and we appreciated the coaching from the two full time crew of Black Watch - Kyle and James. With no furlers or electric winches, it was a true team team effort to get around the course. The whole time we were all in awe of the beauty and vastness of the boat. One highlight was having five sails up at once. On Sunday the course was shortened, so despite the pursuit format we didn't know how we had finished. At the awards we were very excited to find out we had won the race and subsequently won overall for the Vintage division!”

WASZP North American Championship |
Event recap from Ulf Westhoven, WASZP North Americans 2023 Co-Chair:
"The WASZP North American Championship was held in Nahant Bay during the first week of August. Thirty five sailors, aged 14 to 72, hailing from as far as Hawaii, Vancouver and Jensen Beach, FL competed for points in the world rankings. Several EYC members - Ledyard McFadden, Bill Murray, Nicolas Regnault, Stein Skaane, Max Westhoven and Ulf Westhoven - attended the pre-regatta “learn-to-foil” clinics. Everybody was able to get onto the foils. Bravo!!!
Bill Murray summed up his experience: “It’s like skiing in the East and then going out West to ski powder…It's the same sport at its core, but it feels completely different and utterly amazing! After your first run up on foils, you realize that you're going to get completely hooked and you're going to want a lot more!” Nicolas Regnault managed to learn to foil and to compete in the regatta in one week; his time at Pleon has prepared him well. See regatta results. This was the first time ever that the EYC has run a foiling dinghy regatta." |

"Thanks to our Race Committee Chair Chris Lubeck who had to work through many logistical challenges, together with the hosting Swampscott Yacht Club. Chris coordinated moving race committee boats, equipment and people to and from Swampscott over four days. Kudos to PRO Susie Schneider and her high caliber team of Race Committee volunteers including Vice Commodore Alan McKinnon, Alex Regnault, Bryan Lee, Chris Noble, Fiona Lubbock, Greg Mancusi-Ungaro, Jim McCully, Kate and Tom Dailey, Ledyard McFadden and Patrick Andreasen, and many more for running races that follow a different format, the grand prix finish, which is unique to foiling boats. Chief Judge Stephen Jeffries recruited an accomplished team of judges including Nancy Glover. Everyone’s efforts had been recognized by the sailors. They want to come back."
