Team Barrows/Henken 6th at Olympic Test Event |
EYC member Ian Barrows and his crew Hans Henken pulled out a 6th place finish at the Olympic Test Event in Marseille, France last week. Their event comments below:
“After battling all event, we made it to within 4 points of the podium going into the medal race final. We had a chance and took our best shot, but ultimately came up short. Penalty turns will do that to you! Regardless, it was an awesome opportunity to learn and race at the 2024 Olympic Venue! We are focused and determined on making it back here in a year and getting the job done! Big Thanks to the Windmark Sailing Foundation, the St. Francis Sailing Foundation, the AmericaOne Foundation and the US Sailing Team! Next Stop: 2023 49er World Championships in The Hague!”

Marblehead to Halifax Highlights |
EYC Waterfront Chair John Thompson and his crew raced in the Marblehead to Halifax race last week. John’s race recap is below:
“The 39th Marblehead to Halifax Ocean race was a bit different from the 2019 race as it was mostly upwind. The Hall Pass crew, all from Marblehead, consisted of Peter Fein, Jim DaSilva, Ron Homa, Kyle Heffrin, Matthew Thompson, Sam Thompson, and John Thompson. The crew had prepared for a light wind race and was surprised when they experienced stiff easterly breezes that brought rain, fog, and chilly temperatures. This was a completely different race from the 2019 race, which had mostly south westerly breezes and warm sunny conditions. The crew spent most of the race in ski hats, long underwear and “foulies”. The highlight of the race for Hall Pass was Wednesday afternoon when the breeze filled from the south with sunny skies and 10 knots of breeze. Unfortunately, for Hall Pass, this breeze shut down later in the day on Wednesday and Hall Pass was parked for 11 hours - a frustrating 13 miles from the finish.
Hall Pass finished the race at 13:00 on Thursday placing 5th in the PHRF Racing fleet.
Another highlight for the Hall Pass crew was competing with Zig Zag and Vamoose for the prestigious Minot MacAskill trophy. Team USA emerged victorious against Team Canada to retain the Minot MacAskill trophy that was won by Team USA in 2019.”
Many other EYC boats and sailors competed in the race, including but not limited to those below: Megan Strehlow on Jump - 3rd place ORR-3 Alden Reid on Blitzen - 6th place ORR-4 JB Braun’s Eos sailing short handed with Ryan Braun - 2nd place PHRF-2 Seamus Hourihan’s Thirst with EYC members Bill Kaull and Doug Halstead on board - 1st place multihull EYC boats Thirst, Hall Pass, and Eos all included father-son crew.

EYC Sailors at the ORC East Coast Championship |
Recap from Sailing Chair Stan Schreyer:
“Many EYC sailors competed in the 2023 ORC East Coast Championship hosted by the New York Yacht Club on July 14 - 16. One windy buoy race was held on Friday in a rarely-used course area West of Prudence Island. On Saturday, a 26 mile distance race was run in Rhode Island Sound. Racing was canceled on Sunday due to thunderstorms, low visibility, and tornado warnings. The event was run as a warm-up for the ORC World Championships which will be hosted by NYYC in September of 2024.”
Brian Rice, Tom Erskine and Cole Erskine sailed on JV66 Denali, coming 2nd in ORC A division. Alden Reid finished second in ORC D aboard the Cape 31 OJ. Stan Schreyer, Ian McLaughlin, and Andrew Erskine finished 3rd aboard Summit 40 Escape Velocity in ORC D. James Collins sailed on R/P 45 Pterodactyl, coming 4th in ORC B.

New Bedford YC Junior Regatta |
Some Eastern/Pleon junior sailors traveled to the New Bedford Junior Regatta last weekend. The event had a competitive 50 boat fleet. Light and shifty conditions favored the Marblehead team, and this group of Eastern Yacht Club Junior sailors achieved very respectable results at their first major 420 event. Sander Skaane was 5th, Jack Morgan and DB Murray 8th, and Felix Regnault and Will Piper 43rd. The group is gearing up for their next event, Marblehead Junior Race Week.

If you are an intermediate foiler, then you can sign up to charter a WASZP and get coaching for the pre-regatta clinic and the regatta. WASZP USA has partnered with WeCANfoil to create this affordable offer. Spectate! The races will be held in Nahant Bay August 3 - 6.
