Team EYC 5th at the Thayer Trophy |
Team Captain Megan Strehlow led the team of Ashley Hoguet, Lily Lichtenstein, Debbie Noble, Kim Kaull, Hannah Polster, Ashley Boyle, Laura Lee, Kelsey Wheeler, Camille Homa, Beanie Eissner, Carolyn Corbet, and Lane Kaeyer in this year’s Thayer Trophy. Check out Megan’s recap below: An all women's EYC team competed in the Corinthian Yacht Club's national women's team racing invitational last weekend - the third annual Thayer Trophy. The team roster boasted a multigenerational group ranging from 17 to 65 years old, experienced and brand new team racers, making our team the most diverse at the event. The team gathered for a practice Friday evening before the event and were fortunate enough to have Fran and Jeremy (our new Sailing Director and Bosun) stay late to observe and coach. Both gentlemen showed up to support us throughout the weekend, including Fran hosting a debrief Sunday morning before racing for which we are truly thankful and excited they have joined team EYC!

In the short time since its inception, the event has grown in competition, this year even attracting a team from Newport Harbor Yacht Club. Conditions ranged from true Marblehead summer classic floating in the rain, to a beautiful steady southerly on Sunday, allowing completion of two round robins and gold and silver rounds. Team EYC lost a double tie breaker (which came down to average points sailed in a race) to finish in 5th place and win silver fleet. The team learned a lot, had many effective races including beating the winning team twice, and a successful three-boat mark trap at mark 4.
The women are stoked for more competitive racing and encourage others to join the Thursday Women's Sailing Nights. Looking forward to next year, AVV! |

Team EYC Fleet Racing Opportunities |
Eastern has been invited to participate in two fleet racing invitational regattas this fall. Between the two, there is opportunity for sailors of all levels and sailing backgrounds to represent the club. The Team EYC co-chairs are working to select drivers and teams for these events, so please reach out to Clinton Hayes or Hannah Lynn if you are interested or have questions. |

Lipton Cup
For the first time since 2016, Eastern has been invited to race in the Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup, hosted by San Diego Yacht Club October 27 - 29. This incredibly competitive and fun event comprises the best sailors from Southern California clubs and a select few teams from around the U.S. as well.
| |
The regatta format is short-course racing in South San Diego Bay in the local fleet of J/105s. |

Cruise Cup
The Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club has invited Eastern to apply for one of 11 available berths to the 2023 Seawanhaka Invitational Regatta for the Cruise Cup, September 23 - 24. The Cruise Cup was first held in 2019, was canceled due to the pandemic in 2020, and returned in 2021. The college-style fleet racing held in Seawanhaka’s fleet of 12 Sonars has been a tremendous success in these early years, with tight racing on the water and a Corinthian spirit ashore. The regatta is intended to serve as a simple, fun, and competitive event. Race times are targeted at 30 minutes and run on windward-leeward courses.

Three EYC boats and a handful more members sailed in the Lambert Ocean Race last weekend. The race began Friday afternoon in Marblehead with 10-12kts and a nice sunset on the first leg up to a rounding mark off of Rye, NH. The breeze held for most of the beat back to Marblehead in the dark, but as the fog rolled in and the fleet turned for the South Shore, it became light with periods of rain, stretching the race a few hours longer.
Jud and Cindy Smith’s Africa, with many EYC sailors on board, crossed the finish line first around 8am Saturday with the rest of the fleet getting home around mid-day. Africa won the event with the best corrected time. Other EYC boats on the start line included JB Braun’s Eos and Chris Lubeck’s Man of War, as well as some EYC sailors on Virgo who took first in C division.
