Team EYC at the Helga Cup |
|
|
Team EYC competed in three days of short format (~12 min) fleet races on inner/outer trapezoid courses in J/70's with spinnakers, hosted by Norddeutscher Regatta Verein in Hamburg, Germany. The event brings teams in from all over the world and as always Team EYC had a blast and left with lots of new international women's sailing friends! The team included Alix Israel, Liz Dubovik, Annabelle Ayer, and Katie Rodger.

Many EYC boats and individuals traveled to Newport last weekend to compete in the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta, which consisted of the traditional Around-the-Island race Friday followed by a weekend of buoy racing. Despite dismal forecasts, the event

saw mostly sunny skies and southerly breeze all weekend, making for three great days of racing. EYC’s Lily Lichtenstein raced Friday on Past Commodore Henry Brauer’s Swan 42 Tio Loco and provided the following recap:
“The weekend saw challenging conditions with light breeze and strong current, leading to wind delays on Friday and Saturday. The famous round-the-island race, held on Friday, was sailed as an adjusted course, rounding Gould Island instead of the usual Conanicut. A positive from wind delays was the opportunity to look at all the beautiful classics and 12 Meters out on the water!” |

EYC members on the water included:
Past Commodore Henry Brauer, Lily Lichtenstein, Remi Hutchins, and Hannah Polster on Henry’s Tio Loco - 2nd place ORC C
Stan Schreyer, Ian McLaughlin, Hannah Lynn, and Junior Sailing Director Charlotte Martinez on Escape Velocity II - 3rd place ORC D, 2nd place Around-the-Island
Jud Smith on Impetuous - 1st place ORC C, 2nd place Around-the-Island
Vice Commodore Alan McKinnon, Todd Barbera, Jamie & Beverly Noyes, and Dan McCarthy on Todd’s Tramontana
Alden Reid & Hannah Lynn on IC37 O-J Charlie Welsh on Pterodactyl |

The women from Tio Loco accept the award for 2nd in Class. L-R Allison Chenard, Navigator/EYC member Hannah Polster, NYYC Rear Commodore Clare Harrington, Ali Blumenthal, Katja Sertl. |

Safety at Sea Seminar Recap |
|
|
Recap from Toby Reiley: "Sixty-eight students, including many powerboaters, took the Safety at Sea Hands-on Practical Seminar last Saturday. With 4 life rafts for students to enter from the pool, the Marblehead Fire Department on the beach teaching fire control, and lots of flares to practice with, the students were put through their paces! We received many emails with positive comments for the EYC team who organized the event. Be on the lookout for details on SaS 2024!”

Family Navigation Seminar - July 1 |
|
|
For moms, dads, grandparents, and kids ages 8 and up, join us for a free Local Waters Navigation Seminar for people who choose to go to sea in boats. You may venture out on big boats, little boats or sailboats. You may only go to Manchester or Brown’s Island, or you might not even own a boat, but we all love it!
Here is what you will learn to prepare for that day when the fog rolls in. And it will! How to properly use a cell phone or VHF radio to call for help.
How to use a chart and compass, even if you don’t have any other navigation tools. How to use a cell phone or GPS to find out where you are and get where you are going.
How to be a better boater, a valued guest, and a better friend. Ultimately, how to get your family home safely.
Make each outing an experiential learning adventure, especially for your children. Practice makes perfect. Don’t have a GPS chart plotter on your boat? No problem! We demonstrate two phone apps that work really well. (Google maps is not very useful on the water).
We’ll have waterproof charts available for $165.00 each (about half price) which you can charge to your EYC account. They cover Swampscott to Ipswich, including Marblehead, Salem, Manchester, Gloucester, Rockport and the Annisquam Canal out to the beaches beyond. You can take seminar notes right on it. These charts will not disintegrate in the rain or when stored in your center console. Get one for home and one for each boat.
Sign up here as an individual or for your whole family. No charge, but limited to 125 people. Sponsored by the EYC Sailing Committee. Any questions, reach out to Toby Reiley 978-815-2282.
