Team EYC 4th at the Cumberland Cup |
Team EYC flew over to London to compete in the Cumberland Cup, hosted by Royal Thames in their brand new fleet of sonars. Hannah Lynn, Kevin Shea, Gretchen Curtis, Kelsey Wheeler (skipper), Ian McLaughlin, Ashley Boyle, James Collins, and Ansgar Jordan (skipper) battled their way to a 4th place finish in a field of 10 competitive teams. |
The first day saw no breeze and as a result, no racing. Team EYC went 6-3 in the round robin on Friday, earning a spot in the gold round. After the gold round on Saturday morning, EYC sat in 4th place, facing a match against the winners of the silver round, Yale, which EYC won to secure a place in the semifinals. |
| |
Ultimately, EYC fell to Newport Harbor to finish 4th overall. Home team Royal Thames won the event. The hospitality shown by the RTYC was unmatched, and the event field was both incredibly competitive and friendly, making for an excellent sailing experience. You can see the team rosters and results here. |

Team Barrows/Henken Spring Update |
EYC’s Ian Barrows and his crew Hans Henken had a challenging spring regatta calendar with some variable results, but they wrapped up their Mediterranean circuit with a solid 7th at the 2023 SOF French Olympic Week in Hyeres. |

They are taking some time off now before starting up training at The Hague, Netherlands, which will be the venue for the 2023 World Sailing World Championships this coming summer. You can read their full report and follow their Olympic journey here. | |

EYC’s Clinton Hayes, Paula Grasberger, Peter Lynn, and DB Murray competed in the local qualifier for the US Sailing Match Race Championship for the Prince of Wales Trophy last weekend. Clinton’s event recap is below:
“This past weekend, we represented Team EYC at the US Match Racing Championship Qualifier hosted by Boston Yacht Club. Saturday saw wind in the 8-15 knot range and a heavy downpour nearly all day. We completed one round robin, winning every race. Sunday was a much different day with a 10-12 knot breeze dying to nothing by 4pm. We completed another round robin with all 7 teams, this time losing one race. After the round robins, we sailed a first-to-two-wins semi-final, winning both races. The finals saw the worst wind of the weekend with randomly dying and filling breeze from zero to 5 knots. Our team won race one but lost race two before the time limit expired. This resulted in the tie broken by the team with the best record in the round robin stages, so we ended up with the victory.

Great sailing all weekend with Paula Grasberger on the bow, Peter Lynn trimming main and kite, and DB Murray, the only junior at the event, doing pit.” |

It remains my hope that New York (Captain Pearaon Potts), Boston (Captains Sarah Brophy and Marblehead Harbor March Race Champion James Pinder), Eastern (Captain Alden Reid) and CYC (Captain Joe Fava) will be able to send at least one boat to participate in each soirée. Dates are June 4, July 2 and September 10. Contact the captains above to get out for these events. No keeping score, as many races as we can get in in 2-3 hours, and beers post racing.
