Tomas Hornos Wins Etchells at Marblehead Race Week |
Tomas and crewmembers Luke Buxton and Ed Morey grabbed the Etchells class win by a commanding 17 points, also securing a perpetual trophy for their performance named in honor of the world’s most accomplished Etchells sailor and EYC member Dave Curtis. Tomas summarized the weekend:
"Very pleasant weather, although a shifty breeze created some very close and fun racing in the Etchells. The fleet of 15 boats had a variety of ages and experience levels. We had sailed the previous three MRA Saturdays and felt prepared for Race Week. Fairly conservative mid line starts that allowed us to tack on first shift and keep eyes out of the boat was key. Lots of gear changing and relying on crew input. Great exposure to the outside line conditions." |

Other EYC members on the Race Week podium included Bill Widnall (1st in IOD), Carolyn Corbet (2nd in IOD), and Larry Ehrhardt (3rd in Rhodes 19).
Charlie Pendleton’s Bad Hombres took home the J/70 Corinthian division title. EYC youth members were represented as well, with Morgan Cheney coming 2nd in the Laser Radial fleet, and Mason Cheney 7th in the Laser. | |

EYC Youth Members at US Sailing Junior Nationals Qualifiers |
EYC members are familiar with the Sears, Bemis, and Smythe US Sailing Championships after having hosted the event last summer - the qualifying regattas, particularly for Area A (New England), can be just as competitive.
Eastern and Pleon hosted the US Sailing Junior Championship Area A Qualifiers for both the Sears and Smythe last month. The Sears Cup was raced in Sonars with a team of 4 and it was “nukin” at 22-28 knots. Most of the sporty round robin racing was sailed without kites. The young team of Nicholas and Fritz Regnault, Lane Kaeyer and Ashley Hoguet finished 3rd. Just a week later the singlehanded Smythe Qualifier Laser Radial (ILCA 6) was part of MJRW. The much different conditions of “sitting in” or light hiking saw Nicholas Regnault finish third. Fortunately for Nicholas, the winner is not going to the finals and Nicholas gets an invitation. Nicholas and his Pleon teammate Max Dressell will be headed to the finals this month. Good luck to our local sailors!

All-Female Team at Marblehead Race Week |
Eastern Yacht Club proudly boasted the only all-female team in the extremely competitive J/70 fleet at Marblehead Race Week. EYC members Alix Israel, Liz Dubovik, Katie Rodger, and Alex Romagnoli were joined by Shannon Lockewood aboard Winterwind, graciously loaned by Nancy Glover. |

Recap by Martha Altreuter "The competition, which was also for the New England Championship title, was dominated by professionally crewed boats, which represented more than half the fleet. The EYC ladies held their own all weekend, finishing particularly strong in the final race, in which they posted a 15th, surrounded by many of the fleet’s top sailors. Like everyone at the regatta, they enjoyed the best race-week sailing weather in recent memory, having a blast both on the water and ashore at the festivities hosted by the Boston Yacht Club."
