Challenging Conditions for EYC's 152nd Annual Regatta |
Sailors in EYC’s 152nd Annual Regatta were greeted by textbook July 4th conditions on Monday morning. A light gradient breeze began to morph into a sea breeze after the start, but was very slow to build and shift. Boats that managed to stay in pressure without overstanding laylines came out on top in these tricky conditions. The following EYC boats took home trophies: - Betsy McCombs' Scherherazade - 2nd place A Division, Puritan Cup for EYC boat with best corrected time
- Rob Gorman’s Sea Bliss - 1st place B Division, Commodore James J. Storrow Trophy
-
JB Braun’s Eos - 1st place C Division, Cleopatra’s Barge Cup
- Chris Lubeck’s Man of War - 1st place Cruising Division, Guy Norman Cup for EYC boat with best corrected time in Cruising Class
- Stan Schreyer Escape Velocity - Winner of the A Division, Commodore James J. Storrow Trophy

Success at the Commodore's Cup |
The EYC kicked off the July 4th weekend by winning the Commodore’s Cup, held on Friday, July 1st. Flag Officers from all three harbor clubs participated. As a part of the tradition, the winning club is allowed to hoist their burgee on the host club’s flagpole. As the host club, it was very nice to be able to keep the EYC burgee raised that evening. The winning team included Commodore Henry Brauer, Vice Commodore Peter Frisch, Rear Commodore Alan McKinnon, Clinton Hayes, Spencer Powers, Beanie Eissner, David Thompson, Sam Rodiger, Kaitlin Driscoll, Alex Cook, Lily Lichtenstein, Gretchen Curtis, and Carolyn Corbett. Conditions were magnificent with a SW breeze of 10-15 knots. A triple round robin was held, and then a final round between CYC and EYC. Eastern won the final round 2 races to 1. After racing, all competitors came back to the EYC for awards and refreshments. Thank you to Susie Schneider for running the races. Judges included Hannah Lynn, Rick Myers and Stan Schreyer. Also, thank you to Bill Lynn, Clinton Hayes, and Ned Clarke for helping with preparation of the Sonars. |

Race & Racquets Day Recap |
Race and Racquet (R&R) Day took place on Sunday, July 3rd, with perfect weather for tennis and sailing! Members played round-robin tennis in the morning, with Tennis Pro Dan McCormick managing rotations and scoring.
After lunch in the Sailing Center, members headed out for short-course Sonar racing. Six races were completed, with the boat of Vice Commodore Peter Frisch, Alex Cook, and Phil Freiberger winning by 1 point over the boat with Bryan Lee, Spencer Powers, Marine Regnault, and Susan Walker. The other crews were in close pursuit. Overall winner was Phil Freiberger, followed closely by Peter Frisch and Bryan Lee in second, and Marine and Alex Regnault in third.

Although both tennis and sailing were scored, the primary aim was to have FUN and by all reports the objective was achieved! Thanks to Susie Schneider for running races, Doyle Sails and Annie Kaull for the special swag, and the EYC Staff for preparing boats and a delicious lunch.

Women's Team Race Night #2 |
From Martha Altreuter: We had another very successful Women’s Team Race Night on Thursday, June 30th. The weather once again cooperated...with the almost unheard of transition from the day’s NW fairly peppy breeze, to the late afternoon and early evening sea breeze taking place seamlessly and without any dead zone. We enjoyed near perfect conditions - warm, sunny, breeze around 8 knots. Read the rest of Martha’s recap here.

The team of Kelsey Wheeler, Morgan Cuthbertson, Liz Dubovik, and Alix Israel sailed in their 4th Helga Cup in Hamburg, Germany coming in 11th out of 50. As always, we were graciously welcomed and hosted by the NRV, along with other women from around the world who came to sail. The event is inclusive on and off the water, with an adaptive sailing fleet and opportunities to get to know each other off the water. From Alix Israel. |

Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club is extending an open invitation to yacht clubs and sailing organizations to apply for one of 11 available berths for their Cruise Cup, Saturday, October 29th - Sunday, October 30th. The college-style fleet racing, held in SCYC’s fleet of 12 Sonars, has been a tremendous success in its early years, with tight racing on the water and a corinthian spirit ashore. The regatta is intended to serve as a simple, fun, and competitive event.
Race times are targeted at 30 minutes and run on windward-leeward courses. NOR is here - all sailors must be EYC members, and at least one male and one female per team required. Reach out to Clinton Hayes if you’re interested in putting a team together.
