2. WYC
3. Boston YC
4. EYC
5. NBYC
6. Bristol YC

Offshore Sailing for Young Adults Information Night
The Collegiate Offshore Sailing Circuit, Inc. (COSC) (www.cosc-usa.org) in cooperation with the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA is excited to offer an opportunity for young adults regionally (high school, college, post-college) to learn the skills necessary to enjoy sailing offshore.
The course, starting on July 13th and finishing on August 21st, is 6 weeks of weekend training (including 3 overnight sails), and 2 weekday evenings per week. Participants will concurrently take the US Sailing Online Offshore Safety at Sea course. Four sailors plus a coach will man each of two Beneteau Figaro 2s (33’ length over all). The program is limited to 8 participants and will culminate in racing the Ted Hood Regatta’s Offshore Race (~100 nautical miles) hosted by the Eastern Yacht Club.
COSC is a 501c3 whose mission is “to teach fundamental offshore seamanship skills to young sailors”. While many programs expertly offer dinghy and small keelboat sailing instruction, true offshore sailing (i.e., out of sight of land, overnight sailing) requires fundamental seamanship skills beyond those needed for dinghies.
The program concept is based on the traditions of the French sailing culture which breeds talented offshore sailors. The COSC intention is to build, or perhaps rebuild, a culture and passion for sailing offshore among young amateur sailors.
The program will feature a technical curriculum that is classroom and on-lined-based, including: navigation; weather analysis; log- & watch-keeping; rules of the road; anchoring & towing; radio communications; maintenance at sea; nutrition & sleep; abandon ship; and more.
The practical, hands-on training aboard the two Figaro 2s will be conducted by highly experienced offshore coaches. A combination of sessions, including day- and overnight-sails will apply the classroom & on-line training.
The six-week course will culminate in competing in the Storm Trysail Club’s Ted Hood Regatta Overnight Race (~100 miles) hosted by the Eastern Yacht Club . which starts on Friday August 20 and finishes on Saturday August 21.
COSC will host a Zoom information session on Thursday, May 13th at 6:30 pm EDT. Interested parties please email [email protected] to receive a Zoom link to join the session.
