The Eastern Yacht Club is one of the premiere racing clubs in the United States. Our members are active participants in every kind of sailboat racing. You'll find all level of racing sailors on our waterfront, almost every day of the week -- from beginning racers to accomplished skippers and crews including top college sailors, Bermuda Race veterans, America's Cup winners, Vendee Globe participants, Mallory and Adams Cup winners, past and prospective Olympians, team racing experts and one design world champions.
From late May through September, weekly handicap racing is offered through the Boston Yacht Club's Wednesday Night Series. In addition, most Sundays feature offshore and round-the-buoys PHRF racing offered through Mass Bay Sailing. Marblehead hosts the Ted Hood Regatta (formerly PHRF New England Championships) each August.
One Design Racing
Saturdays from Memorial Day through Labor Day feature One-Design racing on two racing circles. Active fleets sailing on Saturdays include Etchells, International One Design, J105, J/70, J24, Rhodes 19, Sonar, Viper, and Town Class.
Weekly Laser racing takes place on Tuesday evenings in June, July and August. Fall and spring feature "shoulder season frostbiting" on Sundays from September-November and again March-May. True frostbiting is sailed in Sonars in Marblehead Harbor. Three EYC-owned Sonars are available for members to race each Sunday, Nov-Dec and Feb-March.
Marblehead Race Week
Marblehead Race Week is the centerpiece of the one-design season. Held annually for over 100 years, this four-day regatta has recently been added to the National Offshore One Design series as the Marblehead NOOD.
EYC sailors actively represent the club at local, regional, national and international team racing events. During Wednesdays in the summer, "pick-up style" team racing in V15s takes place at the mouth of the harbor, with loaner boats available. Thursday night is keelboat team racing night at the club with practices and the Harbor Challenge Series. Thursday nights feature coaching and debriefings facilitated by EYC Sailing Director Greg Wilkinson. This is a great forum to learn the basics of team racing, one of the most exciting sailing formats. EYC hosts the Halloween Team Race each fall, which has become a premier team race on the keelboat team racing circuit. Team EYC is open to all members and is regularly invited to team racing events around the US and internationally.
Pursuit racing is simple and fun. Boats start in reverse order according to their ratings with slowest boats starting first. The first boat around the course is allotted time wins. Novice and experienced races are welcome. Pursuit races are held once a month on Fridays in June, July & August.
