The annual championship tennis match between Eastern and Corinthian was played Sunday, September 9th. The Newhall Cup consists of 15 matches - five men's doubles, five women's doubles and five mixed doubles. This year, many matches were decided by third set super tie breaks, with the EYC emerging victorious at 8-7.
The Newhall Cup, named after Charlie Newhall, began in 1958. While the first two matches were won by the CYC, the EYC has the edge, having captured 43 championships, including the longest winning streak, from 1995- present.
This year many regulars played alongside members who played in their first Newhall Cup. The mixed doubles teams included two winning husband/wife duos - Bill and Tracy Ackerman, and Hoyt and Ana Ludington, who made her match debut. Other team members included past Commodore Martha Altrueter, Alessandra Herman, Kimberley Fillenworth, Amy Leveroni, Kristen Goedkoop, Anne Kirby, Linda Guy, Kate Quigley, Susan Smith, Mary Bongiorno, Beth Noyes, Jill Weise, Pam Rogers, Jeff Forbes, Paul Pruett, Jon Frey, Jay Kirby, Russell Ryan, Bill McGrath, Russell Cushman, Kirt Poss, Geoff Noyes, Ralph James, Dick Knight, Jon Sheldon and Chris Morrissey.
