Light winds prevailed in this year's Eggemoggin Reach Regatta and its "feeder races". In the Castine to Camden Race, Bruce Dyson sailed his 8-meter Pleione to a 2nd place finish in the Spirit of Tradition Class. The following day, EYC sailors finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Camden Wooden Yacht Race from Camden to Brooklin. EYC's Alden Reid crewed aboard the 68-foot Isobel and won the race, while Jack Slattery, tactician aboard Lark, took 2nd and Bruce and the crew of Pleione finished 3rd. The third day of racing was the Eggemoggin Reach race itself, where Jack aboard Lark won, Alden aboard Isobel was second, and Bruce and Pleione finished 4th.
Farther south (and west!) at the Buzzards Bay Regatta, EYC sailors had a strong showing as well. Henry Brauer outsailed the fleet, but finished a controversial 2nd overall in PHRF Class 1 on his J/111 Fleetwings. Henry's team was protested and took their alternative penalty to exonerate themselves, a scoring penalty in this case, but the jury applied a DSQ despite recognizing that Henry and his team had exonerated themselves - a succesful appeal is likely. In the Laser Class, Patrick Andreasen took 9th overall, while his son Bryce Andreasen was 10th in the Laser Radials, the top-finishing EYC boat in the 80-boat fleet. William Hundahl crewed for Thomas Walden in the 420 class and took 9th, while Peter Lynn and Lydia Grasberger were the top all-EYC boat, finishing 24th in the 120-boat fleet.
Charley Cook continues to report in from the Olympics. Charley's reports give a first hand account of the Olympic sailing and especially the race management. Visit the EYC web page to read his full reports.
Five boats have already expressed interest in the September 8-9 Mini Cruise to Hingham. Rear Commodore Bruce Dyson will host a planning evening for the Mini Cruise on August 21st at 7pm at the EYC, location (likely Model Room) TBD. This accessible cruising opportunity is perfect for those who own a cruising boat, but have not ventured out of Salem Sound or haven't done so in a long time. It's also perfect for experienced cruisers to enjoy a laid back weekend of fall sailing! Be sure to email Greg Wilkinson to register for the Mini Cruise to Hingham.
