EYC Team Selection Process

In order to ensure continued support and enthusiasm for the Eastern Yacht Club team racing program, the Sailing Committee designed a team selection process that is (1) open and (2) inclusive.

In cases where we are over-subscribed for an event and need to make difficult roster decisions, the Sailing Committee will use the regatta eligibility requirements, general competitiveness of the event, and possibly other factors to guide us in determining the right group of sailors for the event.

For all events, the Sailing Committee, Team Racing Sub-Committee and Sailing Director will use the following process to select and announce team captains and rosters.

(1)     Securing invitations and building the calendar
         a. The Team Racing Calendar is posted to the EYC web page - http://www.easternyc.org/page/sailing/racing/team_racing  
         b. All team racers are strongly encouraged to express interest in any event(s) they'd like to sail as early as possible by 
             emailing the Sailing Director.

(2)     Captains and team selection for invitational events
         a.  The Sailing Committee selects a Captain for each event.
         b.  Working with the Sailing Director, the Team Captains' responsibilities include:
                  i.      Build a team 
                  ii.     Organize logistics including travel, pre-event practice and meetings
                  iii.    Provide event report(s) to be published to the EYC Team Racing web page
         c.   Immediately following the selection of the Captain for an event, an email* "release" is sent to the EYC membership        
               announcing the Captain and soliciting interest in joining the team.  Team Selection criteria include:
                  i.      Cohesive, friendly team
                  ii.      Interest: direct response to "release" 
                  iii.     Sailing qualifications: team racing experience/knowledge; experience and ability  in boat being sailed
                  iv.     Regatta eligibility requirements: age, weight, sex, etc.
                  v.      Participation: harbor challenge, clinics, practices, etc.
                  vi.     Desire to spread opportunities to all sailors interested in sailing in TR regattas
                  vii.    Where possible, team rosters should include alternates, leaving us in the best possible position to fulfill 
                          scheduling commitments.
         d.   The Sailing Committee approves the Captains' final roster, including alternates, prior to an email* "release" announcing 
               the team.

* - in order to remain as open and inclusive as possible, Team Racing emails are sent to all EYC members who elect to receive "racing" emails in their EYC on-line profile.  Members' default profile setting is to receive "racing" emails.
