Harbor Challenge and V15 Team Racing Underway
Posted On: June 26, 2010
Building off the success of the innaugural Marblehead Team Race Regatta sailed in Vanguard 15s last weekend, the new V15 Wednesday evening team race series began this week at the mouth of the harbor. Initially, four boats sailed a handufl of 2 on 2 races while waiting for the rest of the fleet to arrive. When everyone got to the start line, six boats were split into 3-boat teams and the Race Committee was able to squeeze in a best of three series before the breeze completely shut off. PHRF racers stopped to check out the action on their way back to their moorings from the Wednesday night racing. The format of the V15 Team Race Series is a "pickup" format - meaning skippers/crews arrive as individual boats and are paired up with teammates by the RC to form even teams - making for the most competitive team racing possible. EYC sailors Kelly Gorman, Kim Kaull, Spencer Powers, and Alden Reid were joined by sailors from Corinthian YC, as well as Pleon instructors, the Eastern Point Yacht Club program director and some college sailors spending the summer in Boston. The series continues each week on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer.
Harbor Challenge - team racing in the Club Sonars - got underway on Thursday evening. The harbor start was delayed as a thunderstorm rolled through at 5:30, but the breeze held as the skies cleared and the EYC team joined teams on from Boston and Corinthian at the mouth of the harbor for a great evening of team races. Boston was able to hang on to an early lead over Team EYC in the first race of series, to finish in a winning 1, 3, 6 combination. Team EYC went on to win their next race against Corinthian and evened the score with Boston in the fourth and final race of the night, crossing the line with a 1, 2, 6 with the sun setting in the background.
