New EYC Sailing Event This Weekend Attracts Current World and National Champions
Posted On: June 18, 2010

On Saturday and Sunday June 19 & 20, The Eastern Yacht Club breaks new ground by hosting the first-ever Marblehead Team Race, a new event designed to bring the top young team racers to the Eastern for a weekend of championship-quality team racing.

Competitors in this weekend's sailing will include members of the reigning team racing World Champions, the reigning United States Champions and the reigning Wilson Cup champions.

The Eastern Yacht Club team is led by members Alden Reid and Spencer Powers and includes Pleon Coach Clinton Hayes. They joined by crews  Pat Hession, Kim Kaull and Coco Solsvig, respectively. Alex Cook will also be participating on a team comprised of local sailors.

The regatta will take place in Vanguard 15s, lightweight centerboard dinghies that deliver fast and furious team racing action from the warning signal through the finish gun.  Dinghy team-racing combines split second tactics with extremely physical sailing. This guarantees a different spectacle from keelboat team racing events, like the Harbor Challenge and the Jackson Cup.

Following the Marblehead Team Race, Vanguard 15 sailing will become a weekly fixture at the Eastern, with open V15 team racing offered every Wednesday night.

"The Eastern Yacht Club continues to expand its sailing program with events that target the next generation of top racers" said Greg Mancusi-Ungaro, EYC Sailing Chair. "With this weekend's Marblehead Team Race and the weekly V15 team racing that follows, the Eastern will take more steps to achieving its mission of bringing the best young sailors to Marblehead and to the Club.

Marblehead Team Racing teams will gather at the Club Saturday morning and begin an intense round robin that will conclude with a finals round on Sunday afternoon.  The racing, managed and organized by EYC Sailing Director Greg Wilkinson, is planned to take place at the mouth of the harbor and should be visible from the club or the lighthouse.
