2011 Winter Cruise to the Galapagos
The Galapagos Islands contain a fascinating array of wild life that has been preserved in its natural state ever since Darwin spent time there. Ann and Phil Smith recently visited the islands with a group from the New York Yacht Club. A number of members have expressed interest in participating in a similar trip with the Eastern. While 2011 might seem like a long time away, a trip like this would require advance planning. In order to show the members what the cruise might be like, Phil will be showing a 30 minute professionally produced video of the recent trip in the Barker Club Room on Wednesday, August 26 at 6:45 and again at 7:30. This is not meant to be a formal event---members are invited to drop by, have a drink and look at the video.
The cruise would take place on a National Geographic/Lindblad ship (not sailboats) and would stop at a number of islands during the 7 days that would be spent in the Galapagos. Participation would be limited to 24 couples on a first come, first served basis. Each island has something different to offer in terms of marine, bird and animal life. There are blue footed boobies, albatross and numerous other types of birds that can be seen close up. Imagine standing three feet from a 150 year old, 500 pound land turtle or snorkeling or swimming off a beach with sea lions and penguins while seeing an incredible array of fish. Guided trips on Zodiacs to the various islands occur twice daily and there are lectures by naturalists every day. Attached are several pictures from the recent trip. Come see the video for a more detailed view. Don't hesitate to e-mail Phil Smith at Psmith@ropesgray.com with questions or comments.
