As we begin the new season I would like to take this opportunity to review a change in our dining schedule and highlight some of the events the House Committee has planned for your enjoyment during the next couple of months.
As in the past the Club will offer spring dining on Wednesday evenings in the Barker Club Room. However, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights dinner will be served in the Henderson Dining Room. To accommodate the varied dining preferences of our members the dining room will offer a mix of menu choices – the best of the Clubroom and Dining Room menus. On evenings when dinner is not available in the Clubroom a tapas menu will be offered. Of course, beginning Friday, June 1 we revert to our normal summer dining routine with the opening of the Samoset Porch.
Buffet Dining on the Porch: again this year we will offer buffet style dining on the Samoset Porch and in the dining room every Tuesday evening during July and August. These buffets offer choices for all ages and tastes and are a great summer night’s dinner option.
Mother’s Day Brunch is on Sunday, May 13th. What could be nicer then taking mom to brunch at the Club and have the cost count towards your minimum?
Just in time for Memorial Day weekend; the Galley Grill opens for business on Saturday, May 26th.
June promises to be a busy month beginning with the Second General Meeting on Tuesday, June 5th with dinner to follow.
On Thursday, June 7th local author David Roper will join us at a luncheon to speak about his new book “Watching for Mermaids.” David’s book takes us on a journey through 50 years of waterborne life and adventures through his stories which he characterizes as “the truth…mainly.”
We’ve kicked it up a notch for this year’s Commodore’s Ball on Saturday, June 16th. Following the success of “Night Shift” at last year’s Pool Party we’ve hired their sister band “SOHO” for your entertainment. SOHO is the ultimate combination of exceptional vocalists, electrifying horns and a rhythm section that is second to none. Combine this great dance music with a gourmet meal and you’ve got a real party! Get some friends and reserve a table early.
Chef Christopher, Chef Kaz (yes, Kaz is back!) and Jeff Wargo recently spent a week in France and have come back to the Club full of great ideas and steeped in French wines and cuisine. On Wednesday, June 13th enjoy a “Night in France” with a gourmet dinner, wines to match and an extra special presentation by fellow members, Nina and David Hutchison who lived and cruised on their 43’ sloop Mariah for 7 years in France and throughout Europe. Those of you who attended the annual meeting in January know how entertaining Nina and David’s presentation was and this promises to be every bit as engaging and a great accompaniment to a dinner worthy of Escoffier.
We will reprise Family Dinner Night in the dining room on Thursday, June 21st. Look for details in e Easterner.
We wind up June with a very special evening. Phillip Prodger, curator of photography at the Peabody Essex Museum will be with us on Tuesday, June 26st to present “Ansel Adams: At the Water’s Edge.” No one captured water in all its forms and with greater impact then Ansel Adams. His arresting photos taken from Acadia National Park to Big Sur are the subject of Phillip’s talk and a soon to open exhibit at the Peabody Essex. This dinner/lecture will no doubt whet your appetite to see the exhibit and remind all of our ongoing romance with the natural world.
These events and entertainments would not be possible without an enthusiastic and thoughtful House Committee. This year your fellow members; Sue Brakeley, Molly Frey, Liz Gill, Sarah Mead, Kristen Settelmeyer, Susan Strader, Meredith Tedford, Bonnie Tracy, Matt Velluto, Kevin Walker and John Whitmore have all worked together to offer a variety of options that we hope will appeal.
There are many other events on the summer schedule including a lawn party and Bar-B-Q, a visit by Olin Stephen’s yacht Dorade, a special antique auto show, more frequent music on the Porch, the return of the Halloween Costume Party, etc., etc. I will write you again in a couple of months to highlight additional events and other House news.
As always, your comments and suggestions about any facet of the “House” are welcome.
I hope you enjoy your every visit to the Eastern this summer and on behalf of the House Committee I offer our thanks and best wishes.
