Dear Parent,
Welcome to the 2010 EYC Gators Swim Team! My name is M.E. Regan (the initials stand for Maureen Emily), and I will be coaching this year's team. Meghan, the pool committee, the lifeguards and I are very excited to begin the season and get the kids in the water, and we have some events and goals to help make this coming season a fun and successful one.
I grew up in Salem and graduated at the top of my class from Salem High School in 2009. I just finished my freshman year at Boston College, where I am biology major and a student in the Honors and Faith, Peace, and Justice program. I swam for the YMCA North shore Sharks swim team for 10 years out of the Salem Y, and for the Witches during my time at Salem High. I was captain of the high school team during my junior and senior years. For the past five years I have worked at the Salem YMCA as a lifeguard and swim instructor for children of all ages. I love to read, play music, and cycle in my spare time. I look forward to working with the swimmers and parents of EYC during the upcoming season!
In order to make the most out of each swimmer's experience with the team, I have set a few goals focused both on individual and team improvement. By mid August, when we wrap up the season, I hope that every child will have a firm understanding of each of the four strokes, as well as legal turns and racing dives. We will keep records of individual times for both freestyle and each child's favorite event, encouraging individual goal setting and improvement. Simply showing up to practice with a willingness to learn and have fun will result in progress not only in times, but in stroke technique and strength as well. Most importantly, I hope to make practices as enjoyable as possible and create a team environment of which kids love to be a part!
This year Katie Hayman, Suzanne Murphy, Sarah Foss, and Sarah Burnham will be working with the Gators as assistant coaches, running the morning practices for Jr. Gators and Crocs and helping out at afternoon practices and meets. They all have taught swim team and swimming lessons before. This is the second season at the EYC for all of them.
The following are some important dates for the season:
· Practices will begin Monday, June 28, with a kickoff party after practice for swimmers and families. Practices for Crocs and Junior Gators will begin Tuesday, June 29 at the scheduled time.
· We have 3 meets scheduled so far, July 22nd @ EYC vs. The Beach Club, August 2nd @ The Beach Club. Warm up will begin at 3:00 and the meets will start at 3:30. August 4th @ EYC vs. CYC. Warm up will begin at 3:00 and the meet will start at 4:00.
· The last week of practice will be the week of August 16. We will conclude the season on a fun note with the Red vs. Blue meet & Banquet on Thursday, August 19.
Also, a reminder that parent involvement is much needed, and volunteers for timing, ribbon writing, and other jobs at swim meets are always welcomed. Please let us know if you are interested in helping out!
Team swim suits are a great way to build team spirit and enthusiasm. The EYC navy suits can be purchased (for a very reasonable price) at the Marblehead Sports Shop, with the option of having the EYC insignia embroidered onto the suit. It would be fantastic to have the Gators represented on the pool deck and looking sharp at all of the meets.
Feel free to contact me with any questions at reganmr@bc.edu, or by calling the pool.
I look forward to meeting you and getting the Gators in the pool!
Sincerely,
M.E.
