The 2012 EYC Cruise to Penobscot Bay was a great success. We started in Boothbay Harbor with a party at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club who were their usual warm hosts. Eastern and BHYC have had a long term relationship and members of both clubs are welcome at the other club. Past EYC Commodore, Bob McCann, is the Rear Commodore in Boothbay and he and the other Flag Officers made everyone feel welcome at our opening cocktail party. After a stop in Tenants Harbor, we headed for Jim and Nancy Bildners’ home on Amesbury Point at the beginning of Fox Island Thorofare. Both the view and food were spectacular. The evening featured fresh grown items from the local economy. There were more oysters, lobster and other delicious snacks than anyone could eat although some of us tried. One member was quoted as saying that if he had to die from Hepatitis A the North Haven oysters were the way to do it. The cruise spent two days in Camden which featured a cocktail party at Cappy’s Chowder House. Again the hors d’oeuvres were excellent. In what is fast becoming an EYC cruise tradition we had BYO parties on the wharf at Wayfarer Marine and at Wooden Boat and Buck’s Harbor. Everyone seemed to have fun at these informal gatherings. We were able to have four days of racing one of which was a reach that featured a race between the first to finish and the race committee boat whose speed was limited to 8 knots. On the one day of fog, Cheryl Byrne provided fajitas to the racers for lunch in Pulpits Harbor which more than made up for lack of a race that day. Kudos should go to Deb and Larry Talbot for their tireless planning of a great cruise and to Cheryl and Justin Byrne, with Duffy and Perry, for their excellent race committee work.
