The Junior Journal Part 5
Posted On: August 8, 2009

Somewhat more tangibly, this coming week is host to an experiment: The first ever "Junior Sailing Tuesday Night Movie," at whch we will watch the under-appreciated animated priate comedy Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas starring Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta Jones. If this event is a success (which it will be, because Junior Sailing is always successful) it might lead to newer events, such as Frisbee lessons, kickball games or an outdoor dance party.

Sloop/Sonars continued memorizing the names of parts of the boat, and then went for a distance cruise all the way out to Children's Island! Liam was unavailable for comment at press time, but probably would have said something funny and descriptive, but also reassuring.

Intro to Junior Sailing continued to delve into reaching, and use this skill to sail all the way to Brown's Island (a popular destination this week) before the rain and thunder forced them into the Eastern Pool where, much to their dismay, they were forced to swim around and have fun for the latter half of Thursday's class.

Opti I started off their new session traditionally, with a capsizing test, a swim test, and a modified triangle course. Later, they hung out with the Pleon kids, drinking orange juice and running relay races.

Opti II worked on sailing alone, using long upwind legs to allow the students time to meditate on their own sailing and fine tune their tactics. They then sailed to Brown's Island and later went to Devereux to celebrate such a productive week.

Opti III began practicing roll tacks (if you don't know what that is, ask the kid!), began studying tell-tales, and finished the week with rudderless sailing, a drill that helps the young'uns to better understand the role of weight in the boat. And by rudderless sailing, we mean sailing without a rudder. Which takes mad skillz.
