What do these words mean?

This is EYC's official corporate seal and was adopted in 1870 when the Club was founded. The emblem displays a stately schooner on a rough sea, a lighthouse in the background and a whimsical wind symbol (perhaps Aeolus, God of Wind) and the motto "Aurae Vela Vocant."  This Latin phrase has been translated as "The Winds Call to the Sails". No doubt this phrase was inspired by classical Roman literature and in fact appears in Virgil's Aeneid Book III.

From 1870 to 2000 this official seal appears on the cover and on the title page inside of the Club's Annual Yearbook. Since 2001 on the cover the seal's nautical scene has been replaced by the EYC burgee. However, on the title page inside the year book, the original seal has been retained.
