Star Class District 1 Championship July 15 - 17, 2016

2016 Star Class District 1 Championship
Eastern YC – Marblehead
July 15th - 17th

Thanks to all that came out to sail this year’s District Championship. This regatta was only made possible by everyone’s participation and motivation to compete. It has been a number of years since the Stars were at Eastern but the welcome was warm and the hospitality was great. The club’s new sailing center was the perfect location for this event and will certainly be for future ones (including a bid for 2017 NAs). The RC did a superb job managing the races and the tricky race course, which luckily provided for an unprecedented 7 races. Thanks to PRO Susie Schneider and RC co-chair Al McKinnon, Judges Nancy Glover and Rich Mallinson, as well as countless other volunteers who made this event possible.

27 boats arrived for the start of the regatta which included 2 races on Friday with a planned late start of 1:00pm. The fleet sailed out in a dying breeze but was fortunate enough to have a late sea breeze fill in from the SE direction. The first race had about 6-10 knots with local hot shot Jud Smith / Dave Timberlake taking advantage of the big left shift and winning the race. The second race saw more breeze with 12-15 and Arthur Anosov / Dave Ceasar taking the early lead and not looking back. The fleet later met at Barrelman restaurant (a Marblehead favorite) for dinner and drinks.

Saturday had an earlier start time but with a less promising forecast. The inland westerly quickly turned to a summer southerly and the first race went off in a light 4-6 knots. Class newcomer Luke Buxton / Jason Peters came away with the win after a leeward mark fleet inversion and a stellar second beat. With the race course several miles offshore, (in order to stay clear of other races going on), the current was a big factor. However it was “head out of the boat” sailing that got Anosov / Ceasar the win of race 4 in a shifty but building breeze. In the last race Anosov / Ceasar showed their big breeze dominance again and won the final race of the day. With 5 races scored there was now a drop and only 2 races left. The sailing center at the EYC provided the location for the BBQ. Competitors, alongside friends and family, gathered to catch up and hear the day’s stories.

On Sunday the RC decided to sail in the North Shore track with a beat that would lead to the Beverly coast. A little closer to land, this track would be a change of pace and a quicker sail in. Although Tomas Hornos / Josh Revkin were able to win the two races, it would not be enough to top Anosov / Ceasar who achieved incredibly consistent results the entire weekend. So, congratulations to the overall champion Arthur Anosov / Dave Ceasar on winning the Joe Duplin New England Championship trophy, and Tomas Hornos / Josh Revkin for winning the District 1 Championship.

We couldn’t have asked for better conditions, or a more impressive turnout of competitors and friends. Everyone came away pleased and tired from what was a long weekend of sailing and socializing.
